Carmen & Rey’s Kids
Carmen and Rey’s kids collaborate on a painting of Mother Teresa of Calcutta and incorporate their photos and other collage materials.
The power of togetherness.
The story behind Carmen and Rey is remarkable and the impact they’ve had on children battling cancer across Cuba indelible.
Born in Manzanillo, Cuba, Carmen is the daughter of René Vallejo – a prominent physician and translator – who passed away suddenly in 1969. Struggling to find her place in revolutionary Cuba, she found peace in 1988 after Mother Teresa of Calcutta whispered in her ear three simple words: “Love the children.”
Carmen and her husband, Rey, have spent the past 36 years caring for kids with cancer across the island of Cuba by providing over-the-counter medicines, everyday items, and a consistent community of joy that meets every Sunday at a church in the heart of Vedado.
We support Carmen and Rey’s efforts in many ways. Supporters can make tax-deductible donations through us to directly support their efforts. We also accept donations of food, medicine, and materials. Our favorite way to support their efforts is by organizing art auctions to raise much-needed funds. Learn more here.
